Eating Organic - Why and How to Start

Why Eat Organic? The question should be, why not? I have been eating organic food for about three years now though I do cheat on occasion. I chose to switch after reading two books. The first was by Kevin Trudeau and the second by Jordan Rubin. Many of you have seen Trudeau on television promoting his books and may see him simply as a businessperson trying to make money. There are many skeptics who think that his Natural Cures book is a sham. I'm not going to lie when I state that I was slightly frustrated that the book was more of a reference tool. The book itself made me want to eat healthier but it referred to Internet websites and other books to answer many of my questions. I was discouraged when I visited Trudeau's website to find that I would need to become a member to receive more information. I'm sure this is a great system for Trudeau to make millions and this might make him seem unreliable, not to mention, he certainly doesn't have a background in health care. One thing I can say about Trudeau is that the concept of eating healthy and staying healthy simply by eating an organic version of all the food I eat now certainly sparked my interest. I was also pleased with the fact that he wasn't afraid to tell the general public why the government benefits from offering us trash food like McDonald's and Burger King. I was certainly convinced that eating organic was the way to go when I read Jordan Rubin's story. He was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and cured himself after many unsuccessful bouts of hospital visits in and out of the U.S.

I decided to put what I learned to good use and started shopping at the neighborhood "health food store". I dropped those extra pounds like nothing once I switched to organic food, mind you; this was after many months of diet attempts. There were times when I would just have salads only and the weight just seemed impossible to get rid of! What I didn't know when I was gobbling down my salads is the fact that I was also gobbling down pesticides.

Plenty of people are aware that there are pesticides found in much of the produce at the grocery store but we don't hear about anyone getting sick or dying from it, so we eat it. What some people do not know (like myself at the time) is that when you consume foods like these, the toxins in your stomach start to build up and prevent your body from releasing waste, in turn making us gain unnecessary weight. I was beginning to cleanse my body and began to feel better than ever. I was happy that I was at my normal weight again and I noticed that once this weight was achieved, I stopped losing. I can maintain my weight even when I splurge on organic chocolate or other treats because they're not stuffed with chemicals.

I tried to convince people to get onboard the organic wagon many times and was slightly unsuccessful. I continue to try to convince my mom but it isn't taking. There is a huge misconception out there that organic food is like rabbit food but this is completely false! I'm on my way to convincing my best friend, but her husband is not interested and dinnertime can be a challenge when you need to make two separate meals. It can sometimes be difficult as a guest at someone's home when they notice that you are eating very little food. Some may choose to poke fun at you simply because they don't understand. For example I've attended gatherings where a friend or family member will say something like, "We made this food for the party, but you can't eat it because only eat organic". Sometimes I feel like a rebel when all I've been doing is making healthy food choices for my family and myself. I have officially decided to just keep it to myself for the most part, but no one can stop me from sharing my discovery with a general audience. I don't intend to preach to anyone about what they should or shouldn't do because I have been known to stray occasionally. My point is to let you know that you can look and feel great by simply switching to organic food and I want to spread the word because the differences I've seen in myself are so remarkable I hope that everyone can have the same experience.

I am no longer "lactose intolerant". I couldn't even look at a piece of cheese or glass of milk three years ago without getting sick and wasn't interested in taking over-priced Lactaid pills every day to enjoy the foods I love. I basically stopped eating cheese and drinking milk- not a great idea. These stomachaches did not just happen when I consumed these products. I was a teacher working with children of special needs and was under a decent amount of stress so I attributed this as the reason for having an upset stomach every single day. It would start right after lunch and would last for at least a half hour, if not, for the whole afternoon. I would have an upset stomach when traveling because I was paranoid that my everyday stomachache would come back and I'd be trapped in the car or even worse- public transportation. The stomachaches got worse and I skipped many meals just to avoid being sick for the rest of the day. Little did I realize all I had to do is eat food that wasn't toxic and eat more of it!

Even though I still looked decent, I noticed that certain things just weren't the same. My nails were thin and brittle. My chin was constantly breaking out. My hair started to thin and my doctor tested me for malnourishment. The doctor said I need to eat more and take Lactaid and she fluffed me off with a bag full of sample packets of fiber and calcium supplements and sent me on my way. Thinking back now, I find it a little funny that the supplements contained propylene glycol, an agent used to clean antifreeze off the floors of garages.

After many stomachaches, new diets and much research, I finally switched to raw organic cheese and fresh raw milk found at a farm in Massachusetts and my lactose nightmare was over. Raw milk and cheese contain the necessary live enzymes needed to help our stomach break down lactose and digest easier. Pasteurization and homogenization destroy these live enzymes along with most of the vitamins. Why drink milk and eat cheese when they practically have no benefit to your health because they've been stripped of everything that makes them good in the first place? Not to mention, wash it down with some Lactaid and water as well as a few unwanted chemicals I'm sure? My nails and skin became much healthier as a result of drinking raw milk and I can now enjoy both milk and cheese without the agonizing pain that would normally follow.

Many people think that raw milk is dangerous. I did plenty of research before deciding to drink it and even more research before I gave it to my daughter. It is safe when you buy the raw milk from a local farm that is certified organic because the milk is constantly tested for bacteria counts and the farm receives many unscheduled visits for random testing. The farm is not allowed to sell the milk if the bacteria count is above a certain level and will lose their license until it meets the appropriate standards. The cows are fed hay and alfalfa during the winter and roam freely through the pastures. They are stress free and are not forced to eat corn that takes a toll on their system- even with four stomachs!

Raw milk and cheese coupled with organic food has changed my health for the better. I also drink Goji berry juice for extended health benefits as well as Noni juice on occasion. They each cost about .99 per bottle so I drink them when I can and alternate between the two simply to maintain my budget. Speaking of budgeting, you're probably wondering how in the world I manage healthy eating with the economy the way it is while practically living paycheck to paycheck. First and foremost, I admitted to myself that I would probably need to make a few sacrifices here and there to free up part of my budget for more expensive food. What I realized down the road is that I was actually spending around the same amount of money, slightly more on occasion. Why? Because when you eat organic, you eat less since the food actually makes you full. I made it my part-time job to visit as many stores in my area as possible to take a tally of what foods and drinks they carry and compared the prices. I found which stores carry the foods I eat on a regular basis and which stores I would visit on occasion for items like Goji and Noni juice. Even though it didn't take as much of a toll on my pocketbook as I expected, we all still need to cut corners and find the best bargains for our hard-earned money.

Eating organic and saving money can go hand-in-hand if you do it right and make it important enough to dedicate some time to each week. I may not have a foolproof method, but for now, I shop at a wide variety of stores at different times depending on what I want to buy. I have officially freed myself from the over-priced neighborhood "health food store". It was convenient to get everything I need in one place, but it was costing me an arm and a leg. I may shop at one or four of these stores on the weekend: Trader Joe's, Price Chopper, Stop & Shop, Market Basket, a local fish market, a small nutrition store in the next town and a local co-op. I stopped shopping at Shaw's once I bought my third item of expired organic food. The only thing I travel for is my raw organic milk and it's worth every mile for milk that tastes just like thinned vanilla ice cream!

I'm going to leave you with a list of some of the items I buy, from where, and an idea of what each cost so you can see that it is possible to eat healthy on a budget- as long as you don't mind doing a little extra work and of course a little cooking! Keep this in mind when you are the one trying to convince someone to switch to organic and they think it's ridiculous. Give them this example, If you were at work and you had a splitting headache that was making you sick but had no medicine and your coworker offered you a new over-the-counter pain reliever and told you it works better than any other, would you question them, or would you say thank you and take the pill? Why wouldn't you question a chemical that is about to enter your body yet you will question why you should eat pure food?

Here's my list:

Local Fish Market, "Mekong":

Haddock (Not farm-raised!) .99/lb.
Salmon (Not farm-raised!) .99/lb.

Grocery stores are running out of fresh fish and are turning to unhealthy farm-raised fish, not to mention fresh wild-caught fish from your local fish market is cheaper!

Local Food Co-Op: (This store is approximately 12' by 12'. It is a little treasure that I would never know about without doing research online. Everything listed here is organic. This is great for folks who have very little money to spend because you can volunteer your time and work there to receive discounts on your purchases! Most items are in bins so you bring your own bags and weigh them.):

Black beans
Kidney Beans
Pinto Beans
(Basically, any beans)
Split Peas (All organic legumes run from $.99-1.75/lb.)
Rolled Oats about .00/lb.
Hazelnut chocolate bar I can't find anywhere else! .99
Celtic sea salt about .50 will fill a saltshaker (This is a huge savings!)

The Nutrition Source: (This is another little treasure that I discovered in the town next door and they are very similar to the most popular nutrition store in the city at about half the cost. They also throw in free samples when they get new products. This is priceless- literally. You must find a store like this.)

I buy my organic legumes, oatmeal and sea salt here when I don't go to the co-op because they are close to the same price but have a smaller selection with pre-made bags.

Raw organic honey small jar .99

Organic spinach pasta about .49 per box

Organic raisins about .50/lb

Goji berry juice 1 liter usually .99 but has been on sale at .99 for months (This never happens anywhere else.)

Noni juice 1 liter about .99 per bottle (The Goji and Noni will last 2-4 weeks)

Organic coconut oil about .99 for a jar that will last 1 month

Natural hair gel about .99 for a bottle that lasts my husband 1 month

Jason's natural whitening toothpaste about .99

I need to be careful in this little store because I can easily drop 0.00 simply because of the deals and fun new items. Don't forget stay focused when shopping!

Misty Brook Farm: (This one's the doozie. This is where I don't cut corners and spend the most amount of money on a consistent basis. I travel 45 minutes away to this nearest farm to purchase my delicious raw organic milk. The farm offers a meat as well as a limited variety of products according to season but every one is 100% fresh and most are organic.)

One 1/2 Gallon raw organic milk in the canning jar (Almost straight from the cow!) .50 plus deposit (I usually buy four but it's never enough. Read more about the benefits of raw "organic" milk and believe me everything good you read is true.)

Organic Potatoes .99/lb. Straight from the ground!

Organic free range chicken and duck eggs .00/dozen

Meat is very expensive but delicious and the cleanest meat in the market.

Trader Joe's: (This place is tricky because very few of the products that read organic are 80% organic or more. They could just be 50% or more and this leaves room for 1/2 of the product to contain junk.):

Here's the easy part:

I shop at the grocery stores for pretty much everything else because it is convenient. You really must be careful not to stray when you're at the grocery store and you want to be sure that you're not buying something that is "natural" because it means nothing. I usually purchase products that normally have a long shelf life from the grocery store. Products that need to be fresh like fish, eggs and milk need to be purchased elsewhere.

Do research online and look up organic food to find stores local to you. Do some window-shopping for the items you purchase the most and find the best places to shop to stock up on necessities. Get great recipes on line as well. Certainly check out Jordan Rubin's website and his books to have an understanding of how much you can change your life by eating organic food. Read about the benefits of organic coconut oil, Goji and Noni juice and raw milk.

You will realize that there is very little you need to change. You'll most likely just be buying a healthier version of the foods you already eat and may discover a few new things that you like. If you look hard enough, you'll find that there is and organic version of almost everything out there. Making the switch can be as simple as beginning to buy only organic foods at your grocery store until you get the urge to explore even more. Enjoy!

The farm is not allowed to sell the milk if the bacteria count is above a certain level and will lose their license until it meets the appropriate standards. The cows are fed hay and alfalfa during the winter and roam freely through the pastures. They are stress free and are not forced to eat corn that takes a toll on their system- even with four stomachs!

Raw milk and cheese coupled with organic food has changed my health for the better. I also drink Goji berry juice for extended health benefits as well as Noni juice on occasion. They each cost about .99 per bottle so I drink them when I can and alternate between the two simply to maintain my budget. Speaking of budgeting, you're probably wondering how in the world I manage healthy eating with the economy the way it is while practically living paycheck to paycheck. First and foremost, I admitted to myself that I would probably need to make a few sacrifices here and there to free up part of my budget for more expensive food. What I realized down the road is that I was actually spending around the same amount of money, slightly more on occasion. Why? Because when you eat organic, you eat less since the food actually makes you full. I made it my part-time job to visit as many stores in my area as possible to take a tally of what foods and drinks they carry and compared the prices. I found which stores carry the foods I eat on a regular basis and which stores I would visit on occasion for items like Goji and Noni juice. Even though it didn't take as much of a toll on my pocketbook as I expected, we all still need to cut corners and find the best bargains for our hard-earned money.

Eating organic and saving money can go hand-in-hand if you do it right and make it important enough to dedicate some time to each week. I may not have a foolproof method, but for now, I shop at a wide variety of stores at different times depending on what I want to buy. I have officially freed myself from the over-priced neighborhood "health food store". It was convenient to get everything I need in one place, but it was costing me an arm and a leg. I may shop at one or four of these stores on the weekend: Trader Joe's, Price Chopper, Stop & Shop, Market Basket, a local fish market, a small nutrition store in the next town and a local co-op. I stopped shopping at Shaw's once I bought my third item of expired organic food. The only thing I travel for is my raw organic milk and it's worth every mile for milk that tastes just like thinned vanilla ice cream!

I'm going to leave you with a list of some of the items I buy, from where, and an idea of what each cost so you can see that it is possible to eat healthy on a budget- as long as you don't mind doing a little extra work and of course a little cooking! Keep this in mind when you are the one trying to convince someone to switch to organic and they think it's ridiculous. Give them this example, If you were at work and you had a splitting headache that was making you sick but had no medicine and your coworker offered you a new over-the-counter pain reliever and told you it works better than any other, would you question them, or would you say thank you and take the pill? Why wouldn't you question a chemical that is about to enter your body yet you will question why you should eat pure food?

Grocery stores are running out of fresh fish and are turning to unhealthy farm-raised fish, not to mention fresh wild-caught fish from your local fish market is cheaper!

Local Food Co-Op: (This store is approximately 12' by 12'. It is a little treasure that I would never know about without doing research online. Everything listed here is organic. This is great for folks who have very little money to spend because you can volunteer your time and work there to receive discounts on your purchases! Most items are in bins so you bring your own bags and weigh them.):

(Basically, any beans)
Split Peas (All organic legumes run from $.99-1.75/lb.)

The Nutrition Source: (This is another little treasure that I discovered in the town next door and they are very similar to the most popular nutrition store in the city at about half the cost. They also throw in free samples when they get new products. This is priceless- literally. You must find a store like this.)

I buy my organic legumes, oatmeal and sea salt here when I don't go to the co-op because they are close to the same price but have a smaller selection with pre-made bags.

Misty Brook Farm: (This one's the doozie. This is where I don't cut corners and spend the most amount of money on a consistent basis. I travel 45 minutes away to this nearest farm to purchase my delicious raw organic milk. The farm offers a meat as well as a limited variety of products according to season but every one is 100% fresh and most are organic.)

One 1/2 Gallon raw organic milk in the canning jar (Almost straight from the cow!) .50 plus deposit (I usually buy four but it's never enough. Read more about the benefits of raw "organic" milk and believe me everything good you read is true.)

Here's the easy part:

I shop at the grocery stores for pretty much everything else because it is convenient. You really must be careful not to stray when you're at the grocery store and you want to be sure that you're not buying something that is "natural" because it means nothing. I usually purchase products that normally have a long shelf life from the grocery store. Products that need to be fresh like fish, eggs and milk need to be purchased elsewhere.

Do research online and look up organic food to find stores local to you. Do some window-shopping for the items you purchase the most and find the best places to shop to stock up on necessities. Get great recipes on line as well. Certainly check out Jordan Rubin's website and his books to have an understanding of how much you can change your life by eating organic food. You will realize that there is very little you need to change. You'll most likely just be buying a healthier version of the foods you already eat and may discover a few new things that you like. If you look hard enough, you'll find that there is and organic version of almost everything out there. Farming practices used before the 1900's are classed as organic. It was only after this that added chemicals such as urea and DDT were brought into farming - previous to this, farmers didn't have the knowledge and simply put, were happy enough with things as they were; as most of us today would be. After all, home grown food is often the nicest, most tasty food we put on our plates.

For some reason, during the 1960's and 1970's the concept of organic food became a separate entity to the 'normal' food we were then buying. Consumers had been effectively duped into believing that what they were buying, was food as nature intended, it not appreciating that the chemicals which were added during growth of the 'normal stuff' were what actually made the food abnormal in the first place.

Rachel Carson, a prominent writer, biologist and ecologist established public awareness of these issues via 'Silent Spring', a book she wrote which basically brought about major controversy on the use of agricultural chemicals and synthetic pesticides in particular. As a direct result of this book, and the growing concern over the use of farm chemicals which consumers were suddenly more aware of, chemical regulation procedures were put into place, and when the demand for organically grown food rose, so did the need for further regulatory procedures to cut down on the ecologically destructive and toxic chemicals.

Today, organic food is finally reaching an all time high of acceptance from consumers, so its demand is increasing - more 'organically acceptable' agricultural procedures are gaining momentum, and it seems even though it is more expensive than chemically treated foodstuffs, it is healthier, and it is that health factor which is winning the battle against chemically treated consumables.

A creation of a whole new set of ideas about organic standards which first came into debate in 1990, took over ten years to refine to relative perfection, and they will still evolve as new practices come into force. It is by these standards now that, organic food and other products such as wool in the USA is grown/gathered.

All of this though begs the questions - why can't farmers just grow food without chemicals at all, why does it need regulation, and why were chemicals introduced into grown food and other consumables in the first place; I think you already know the answer though, and that's money.

In this modern technological age where farmers are in direct competition between each other to gain the bigger contracts of the supermarkets and other food retailers, they have to be cheap. They simply can't grow the vegetables (for example) as fast as the grocery store can sell them, so they have to resort to other methods to keep up, or did do at least until the consumers voice began to ring out strong and true.

Organic food is no longer a small niche in the food desires of Americans; it is becoming what everyone wants. Everyone now wants and feels the need to eat in a more healthy fashion with the onset of so many new medical conditions which prove costly as it is; a little more expense to eat something grown without strong use of chemicals (which could 'theoretically' make it worse) might mean a saving health-wise instead.

The organic food trend of today is growing ever-stronger, and not just for vegetables even though at one point organic purchases totalled over 40% of all organic buys. Meat and fish which is organically produced is still at the lowest of all food purchases, but is moving up the chain too. Dairy, bread and grain, beverages and snacks are all becoming more and more popular.

Today there are more Organic supermarkets popping up everywhere, sometimes in certain areas more than others - almost as though people in one state are more 'organic' than others but on the whole it is more of a blanket change than just a few people trying to eat in a healthier way, the amount of people eating organically is far more substantial than most realize. Suddenly people have more choice, and this is obviously because the demand is there. The world is finally going organic, and with any luck the bigger grocery store chains will have to meet this demand, rather than flood the market with low-cost chemically treated alternatives.

2 cups water 2-3 cups lightly packed baby spinach leaves (preferably organic) 1 pear 1/2 to 1 banana 1/4 tsp cardamom 1-2 tbsp chia seeds (soak in 2 cups water for a while)

TIP: Chia seeds are high in fiber, calcium, protein, antioxidants and omega-3. You can buy them at health stores.

How To Grow Aronia Berries - A Super Fruit

Introduction

Aronia plants are easy to grow and they will grow in many different garden soils. Aronia berries have high levels of vitamins and antioxidants, growing them can be a worthwhile addition to any home garden or field.

General Aronia Growing Ideas

Purchase your plants from a reputable nursery. Your best buy is usually two-year old plants. You should start getting some berries the following year. This will provide you with a berry crop very soon. The aronia plant varieties for fruit production are Viking and Nero. For fruit production purchase one of these varieties.

Aronia bushes are not very picky about the soil in which they are planted. They are well suited to a wide range of soil types. Aronia shrubs are some of the best at doing well in very wet winter soils that may be caused by slow drainage, and in dry summer soils.

To find out if you have suitable garden soil, take a sample to your local county agent and have it tested. Soil tests are one of the great bargains when it comes to gardening and growing plants. Your local extension agent can be a great resource for information. If your soil is not quite suitable, the report should tell you what you need to do. You can amend the soil by adding organic matter to the soil. Soils with high clay content tend to be very fertile. This is because the microscopically dispersed clay particles have the capacity to form chemical bonds with the elements or compounds essential for plant growth found in the soil. Adding organic matter to soils will improve the soil's fertility; help reduce soil compaction of the clay soil and increase water flow through the soil. Adding organic matter also will increase and increase air space within the clay soil, and make the soil more tillable. Sandy soils tend to be more acid than the more fertile loams and clays that are rich in nutrients. Adding organic matter to sandy soils will increase its fertility and water holding capacity.

pH Levels

The optimum pH level to grow aronia is slightly acid (6-6.5), but aronia will tolerate a wider pH range (5-8.5). You can supply a soil sample to your county agent for analysis. The report will tell you would if anything is needed to amend your soil.

Water

Aronia plants are not drought tolerant but they can usually dry summer soils once established. They need watering for maximum fruit production. Once the plants are established water them as needed usually once or twice per week when dry. You need to take into account recent rainfall amounts before watering your landscape. For a field of an acre or so the following guidelines may be helpful. Be ready to provide a several hour-long watering times of drip irrigation a couple times a week for a full year if rain is not plentiful this will increase the likelihood of success of plant survival. Not enough water after they are planted is the major cause of death for newly planted shrubs.

Water your plants at the right times

Water your plants when needed, while the sun is down between about midnight and 8 a.m. using a timer. This can save up to 700 gallons of water each month by reducing evaporation caused by the sun and wind by watering. This time is when the plants are most receptive to water. The most basic principle in watering is a very simple: Never water in the evening or at in the middle of the day. Morning is always the best time to water. The plant's roots are most able to receive water in the morning, and will utilize any moisture you provide most efficiently. Plants are also most to receive water in the morning, because the cells of the leaves 'open up' to accept the morning dew. This is the reason early morning is the best time of the day for foliar feeding using compost tea directly on plants. Never Water While the Sun Shines! Late afternoon or early evening is the worst time to water because the plant cells have shut down and will not open up again until the sun goes down!

Drip irrigation

Use drip irrigation system for your aronia shrubs and may save up to 375 gallons of water each month. Make sure your drip irrigation watering heads are not clogged or broken. Check to see that the system does not leak and that the water is directed to your plants

Fix leaks

Fix leaks supplying in your irrigation water system and save many gallons each month. Plants once established if your property does not receive sufficient rain each year you should water your plants as needed. Most plants generally need at least 1 inch of water per week. However frequent watering risks the plants' roots staying wet, over watering and standing water can cause the plants roots to drown and rot in the ground. The plant's roots need to dry out between watering. These easy tips will save water, help protect the environment and reduce utility costs for the water and the energy required to pump it.

Organic Matter

Increasing the amount of organic matter is probably one of the most important things you can do to improve your soil. Decomposed compost in the soil is a necessity for successful aronia planting. Add your own compost, leaves, grass clippings, or manure to the soil and mix it in well. A soil mix should contain about 2% to 5% organic matter. Sandy soil should contain closer to 2% or 3% and clay soil needs 4% to 5%. Spreading a layer of about 4 inches of organic mulch around plants helps retain moisture and saves water, time and money.

Mulching

Mulching is one of the most important ways to maintain healthy plants. Mulching reduces the amount of evaporation from the soil surface and reduces irrigation needs by about 50 percent. Using about 4 inches of organic mulch can save up to 750 gallons of water each month. Mulch helps keep plants cool, reduces evaporation, provides nourishment and helps control weeds.

Green manure crops

Cover crops, also referred to as called green manures, are an important way of improving texture, soil aeration and adding nitrogen. Cover crops support and encourage microorganisms and worms. Planting a "green manure crop," is an effective method of improving poor soils. Crops such as buckwheat or winter wheat serve as good green manure crops. Other green manure crops may include legumes such as cowpeas, soybeans, annual sweet clover, vetch, sesbania, and velvet beans. Rye (Secale cereale) is perhaps the best overall small grain cover crop. It can be seeded from August in northern and eastern Kentucky through mid-November in western Kentucky. Extremely winter-hardy varieties, such as Aroostook, should be considered if late planting is necessary. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is very effective in suppressing weeds and can also be used as a winter cover crop. It can survive over winter and will need to be mowed or by using No-Till rolling down the cover crop in spring instead of mowing it, the cover crop takes longer to decompose and becomes a weed-suppressing mulch. Use about the same seeding rate as annual ryegrass. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) can be used as a winter cover crop even though it is not an annual grass. It can be seeded mid-August through September and can provide a good ground cover before winter. Broadcast 20 to 30 pounds of seed per acre on clean-tilled soil. Use a corrugated roller (cultipacker) to firm the soil and press in the seed. The seed should be covered no more than ½-inch deep. Fescue can be grazed or cut for hay in early May. If it is to be used for hay. These crops improve the soil by the nutrients they bring up from the lower soil and converting them into plant organic matter. This actively growing organic matter is plowed under to incorporate the roots and leaves into the soil. This is an effective, cheap, and ecologically sound way to build organic matter into the soil.

Control weeds

Weeds compete with plants for sunlight, water, nutrients, and growing space. Weeds are one of the major threats to your crop they grow faster than your plants and successfully out compete them for available resources. Consider using permeable landscape cloth to control weeds if it is requires too much labor to control weeds otherwise. Weeds are a major factor in reducing farm productivity.

Setting fruit

Pollination or fertilization is not required to set aronia fruit because the flowers are bisexual and thus the plants are self-fertile. Aronia violet-black berries are firm 1/3 inch in diameter and produced in loose clusters of about 8 to 15 berries. The fruit ripen in mid September and can be harvest over the next four to six weeks however the berries tend to start shriveling up after ripening. The fruit and the foliage are not bothered much if at all by insects or diseases. Birds do not eat the developing fruit. Bird depredation is an indicator of when to harvest. If not harvested, birds and game birds will eat the fruit during the winter

Yield

In one site three-year old Nero plants planted in clay loam soil with a pH of 5.7 the plants produced over 20 pounds per plant. For an acre of 670 plants this was of about 14,000 pounds per acre for the third year of planning in the field. This is a pretty typical yield for Viking and Nero varieties. Typically Viking and Nero aronia variety shrubs produce about two pounds of berries per bush two years after planting. By the fourth year after planting, aronia berry production is about 20 pounds per bush. Production levels off at around 20 pounds or more per plant by the fifth or sixth year after planting.

Planting density

Planting density for machine harvest is usually about 600 to 700 plants per acre. For mechanical harvest, plants are spaced 3 to five feet apart in rows that are 12 feet apart. The plants produce numerous new shoots that will grow up from the roots of established plants. These will form a hedgerow by filling in the space between the plants. Most new growers who are just getting started initially plant one-half to five acres and expand the number of plants later.

Nutrient Composition

The rising interest in eating healthier foods has help make aronia berries and their products gain in popularity in recent years. The levels of vitamins, minerals and folic acids are high in the berries. Aronia berries are a little known super food that is gaining in recognition that has tremendous nutritional value. The aronia berries are also one of the richest plant sources of phenolic substances, mainly anthocyanins and proanthocyanins. Tests on aronia grown show that juice has a pH of about 3.5 and a brix of around 16.

Antioxidant capacity of fruit

Aronia berries top the list of more than 100 foods that have been scientifically tested for antioxidant capacity. Aronia berries have a huge potential as a healthy super food. Researchers have investigated at how aronia berries affects cardiovascular disease, liver failure, colon and breast cancers, and obesity.

Brazilians like to add avocados to their ice cream, while the Filipinos like to puree their avocados with sugar and milk to make a desert drink. avocados are available year round and California is the leader in avocado production, producing 90% of the nations avocados. San Diego county is considered the avocado capital in America, because it produces 60% of all avocados grown in California. There are 7,000 avocado groves in California and a single Californian avocado tree can produce around 500 avocados (200 pounds of fruit) a year.

Most avocados darken when they are ripe. Also most avocados when ripe, yield to pressure. Look for fruit that is average to large, oval-shaped and heavy. To prepare an avocado, slice it open and remove the seed, then peel the skin from the flesh. The texture of the flesh should be silky smooth and the color of the flesh should be a rich green color. Like other fruit, avocados have different varieties available as certified organic fruit.

Introduction

The following are varieties for a season of fresh great tasting and keeping blueberries. This is a listing of some of the best tasting and keeping varieties listed according to ripening time (i.e. Early-Season, Mid-Season, Late Mid-Season, and Late Season) and variety type (i.e. northern and southern varieties). Northern varieties are generally plants for growing zones 3 to 7. Southern varieties are generally for growing zones 5 to 10 depending on the variety. Always select your plant by the growing zone for which it is suited. This list is based on reports from various users and does not claim to be exhaustive and complete. However it does give a good cross-section of good tasting and keeping blueberry varieties.

Best-tasting and keeping Early Season Varieties

Northern Varieties

a) Hannah's Choice (Early season) this is a sweet blueberry with good flavor. It represents an improvement in sweetness, flavor and firmness over currently grown early varieties. It yields 10 to 12 pounds per bush at maturity. It is the best flavor of all early ripening northern varieties.

b) Patriot is an excellent flavored early variety. Its yield is high, averaging 10 to 15 pounds at maturity. Patriot is adaptable to many diverse soil types and performs better in heavier soil than some other varieties. This plant works well as a container plant. It is self-pollinating having an average height of 3 to 4 feet tall. Patriot's low growing bush reflects its partial low-bush parentage.

c) Sierra is an outstanding edible hedge with large blueberries having excellent flavor.

Southern varieties

a) O'NEAL will have yields of 10 to 20 pounds at maturity with large size fruit. O'NEAL is the major leading early southern variety. It is one of the very best flavored blueberries of the southern varieties with consistent quality throughout harvest

b) Star was the highest yielding early southern variety in one study.

c) Premier is a rabbit-eye type with early to mid-season ripening Large, light blue, good quality fruit; excellent flavor and it stores very well and is highly productive.

Best-tasting and keeping Mid-Season Varieties

Northern Varieties

a) Blue Gold is a beautiful, compact, rounded bush. It grows only four feet tall but bears large clusters of easy-to-pick berries. It has Very high production of truly superior fruit. Its fruit stores well. In test Blue gold blueberries have maintained good quality for up to five weeks! The beautiful blueberries form large clusters that are easy to pick and are superb for baking.

b) Draper is a recently developed, highly productive, early mid-season variety with outstanding flavored berries that have superior shelf life. The fruit are eaten fresh, frozen or processed into products like jams, and jellies.

c) Jersey is a mid-season medium size plant with sweet berries. The blueberries have a good shelf life

Southern Varieties

a) OLYMPIA BLUEBERRY is said to be the best tasting of all the blueberries

b) Hardy blue is known for its superior flavored, exceptionally sweet berry. Hardy blue is a tried and true variety that is known for heavy crops of berries. The fruit is perfect for pancakes and muffins. Hardy blue is known for being adaptable to many types of soil, including heavier clay soils.

c) Jubilee is a consistent producer of very high quality fruit even in dense soils and very hot summers and sudden winter cold. Its blueberries have good shelf life.. We particularly like the taste of these easy picking, bountiful crops.

d) Georgia Gem is an early to mid-season ripening variety. The fruit has excellent flavor and firmness. It is quite cold hardy, yet tolerant of high temperatures.

e) Tifblue is thought to be one of the best rabbit eyes. It has mid-season ripening. The Tiftblue blueberries are among the most flavorful rabbiteye blueberries. Tifblue is the most cold-hardy of all other rabbiteye blueberries varieties. It is often recommended to be the predominant rabbit eye variety in any planting.

Best-tasting and keeping Late Mid-Season Varieties

Northern varieties

a) Brigitta is a mid-late season variety with large berries, good sweet flavor and tremendous keeping quality in your refrigerator. This makes Brigitta one of the best late season blueberries. In test this variety remained firm with high soluble solids for five to six weeks of storage

b) Nelson - Fruit quality very good. In test Nelson blueberries have maintained good quality for up to five weeks!

Southern Varieties

a) Legacy fruit has a mid to late-season ripening time. This variety has high quality fruit and stores well. It keeps its leaves through the winter in mild climates, offering a very different look for blueberries in the landscape. Its foliage will turn bright orange in colder climates. The fruit of this variety remains firm with high soluble solids for five to six weeks of storage. The variety seems to adapt to most soils and cold to moderate climates. Legacy was rated as one of the best flavored varieties in USDA trials.

b) Premier is a rabbit eye type with early to mid-season ripening. Its blueberries are large, light blue, good quality with excellent flavor and it stores very well. Premier is highly productive.

c) Ozark blue is a late mid-season variety. The quality of fruit is excellent and the shelf life of the fruits is superior. Its flavor is sweet to sub acid, which means high flavor. It can tolerate heat well and its irrigation requirements are not as great as some other blueberry plants. It resists spring frosts and is highly productive producing high quality blueberries. Ozark blue ripens just before the rabbit eyes. Ozark blue is usually listed as a southern variety, but its outstanding performance further north deserves consideration by growers in cooler climates.

d) Sunshine Blue is a semi-dwarf, versatile evergreen blueberry. It yields large crops of delicious blueberries. Sunshine Blue will better tolerate higher pH soils than many other blueberries. It is self-pollinating and is one of the most popular plants for container growing and landscaping. It has a low chilling requirement of 150 hours making it suitable for Southern California, but it is also surprisingly cold-hardy.
